Four months later, and the open valve was the evidence of the malfunction that defied solution. It was a season of searing heat and sweaty nights, and the panel of the relatively new machine was the problem. Efforts to fix it dragged, but when the technician fixed it, the good news was lost in another conversation. By the time he complained of the same problem later, he had endured days of needless discomfort. The open valve was still there, but when the switches and controls were activated, the air-conditioner was back on duty.
